Le rôle des internes de psychiatrie dans le programme Papageno

La conférence internationale “Mental Health for All – Connecting People and Sharing Experience” qui s’est tenue du 28 au 30 avril 2015 à Lille, a offert une opportunité d’échanges scientifiques et de formation médicale continue en rassemblant pour la première fois en France la WFMH, la WONCA, la SEMFYC ainsi que de nombreuses autres sociétés savantes nationales (SIP, AFPBN, SFPEADA, GCR Recherche en Psychiatrie, F2RSM), ou associations d’usagers et de familles d’usagers.

Le rôle des internes dans le programme Papageno fut présenté à l’occasion de l’atelier « Students and trainees: a resource for the mental health of today and tomorrow ».


Every single student and trainee in care and social services should be considered a future contributor in the field of mental health. The school and training years are a crucial and strategic period to focus on. Along these years, young people build their own professional identity. They have to constantly challenge their representations to integrate new knowledge. They thus exhibit a certain degree of cognitive and affective “plasticity”, which is a necessary condition for such constructive process. Thereby, the learning and training periods represent fertile grounds for skills transmission, interest arousal and awareness awakening, which will support future mental health care and promotion.


The aim of this workshop is to ascertain why and how students and trainees may represent a precious resource for mental health, already available for the present, although not having completed their curriculum. In other words, this means discussing the extent to which developing awareness among students is more than an investment for the future.


In this workshop, original actions and studies led by residents will illustrate how students and trainees may be actively implied in the field of mental health. The presentations will be a support for discussing two main avenues: on the one hand, involvement in the promotion of mental health awareness through a reflexive approach (namely, the learner’s reflection about his own curriculum and status); on the other hand, implication in initiatives led on the social scene to promote mental health and fight against stigma. This will also be the occasion to discuss the conditions for such initiatives (and notably, the development of a collaborative culture) and how to encourage and accompany students and trainees with respect to mental health actions and reflections.

Implication on clinical practice

Students progressively discover the challenges that need to be taken-up whilst realizing their own potentialities. This results in a dynamic suitable for supporting various projects in the field of mental health. Youth usually brings a different and fresh point of view, closely attuned with social evolution. Therefore, social and care students can be forces of proposition and action in prevention, care and community awareness. Moreover, since they are directly concerned, students have the privileged opportunity to promote reflections and innovations in how to develop mental health awareness during their own training, but also in other curricula in which they may be directly or indirectly involved.


Empowering students and trainees is a threefold investment for mental health: mobilizing resources for today, preparing tomorrow actors and contributors and anticipating future transmission and education.
